Because Step-ups involve hip extension, it is a good
exercise for hamstrings as well as glutes and quads.
A barbell or dumbells can be used for this exercise.
 

Stand close to a raised platform or sturdy box and
step-up.

Minimize forward lean as much as possible,


 

try to move up, not forward.  Do all reps of a set
with one leg first and then switch to the opposite leg
to complete the set.
