I've seen some "people" who get them from doctors and go on and off according to a very specific plan. These people tend to do Ok, they may have their problems but they don't generally get really sick. They are using them as Scott said, as a tool to accomplish something in particular. Its a cost benefit analysis. In many or most high level sports out there where any money is involved, you better be using something or you are just wasting everyones time, including your own. I know that this isn't a popular opinion, but its true.
The group that really winds up in sad shape are the guys who start taking the s**t the minute their hands are on a bar. They dont' have any kind of base and the only advice they get is from the guy who sells them the stuff. Not only that but they get addicted in this weird way and can't go off because their whole identity is about "bein' hyooge". They know they are nothing but losers with nothin' else to offer and don't want to face it, so they never go off.
These guys tend to use the worst crap possible. Where I am there are lots of dairy farms and alot of the veterinary steriods (even cow GH) gets predictably "lost", even worse, they take these little pellets and mix them with oil and inject this s**t. These guys run into the real big trouble once the odds catch up with them. They are just as bad as the smack people who use dirty needles. It ain't always the roids that screw them up.
I was working with a HS football team around here and one asked me about roids. I didn't want to bulls**t him and give him the usual speech so I told him "You are buying *something* in a bottle from a Felon, how do you know whats in it and how bad do you want to find out? Do you think that with what YOU can pay there's gonna be much of a guarantee". He didnt' ask again and seemed to kinda lose interest.
I dont' use and never have, but from what I've seen steriods dont' kill half as often as stupidity and insanity do. The same people who run into trouble with other substances and have messed up lives can use roids to do it as well as anything else.

I grew up with a group of Body Builders that used steroids and did they work yes. When a 19 year old kid weighing about 210 can bench 315 for 15 reps I think that says it all. All of these guys were serious and very good. Most of them had one or two state titles to their name in a very short time and I counted everyone of them as friends. This was in the early 1990s.
Here is the rest of the story.
Not one of them today competes or even darkens the doors of a gym. Some of them it totally wrecked their lives for a short time. Dropped out of school, wrecked cars, lost their girl friends, and had poor relationships with the family and friends. Are you getting the picture here. Steroids are a drug and if you abuse them they will be just as destructive as any recreational drug.
I am still in the gym getting stronger every year, competing, and having the time of my life drug free.
I am not knocking those that choose to use, but from past experiences I have seen heavy and unfortunate conseqeunces. If you want more info you need to go to a board where they discuss this in the open.
